Use This Secret Trick to Guarantee a Great Photo
It probably hasn’t crossed your mind, but this photo trick makes a world of difference.
I’m always getting compliments on how great people look in my headshots. It’s not just the contemporary lighting, uncluttered backgrounds, wardrobe, and hairstyling. That’s all really important, of course. Bad lighting, messy hair, or wrinkled clothes will ruin an otherwise great photo as well...but, want to know my secret weapon?
My “Secret Weapon” is…. Body language. Now, you might be wondering, “What the heck does body language have to do with a headshot?”
Posture, pose, and stance combined with a confident attitude communicate integrity and status.
We communicate using body language without thinking. It’s instinctive, and we don’t even realize we’re doing it most of the time. Here’s an example: You can tell a person is engaged and interested because they lean in a little bit. You know they’re paying close attention because they look you right in the eye. You can see their self-confidence in the set of their shoulders.
I want my customer’s photos to make a great first impression on the people they need to influence. So, I coach them using the non-verbal cues of assertiveness, enthusiasm, and interest: leaning in, open posture, and a direct gaze to give their photos maximum impact while projecting a leader's cool and professional presence.
The body language of confidence is open and advancing. It can be hard to coach someone in presenting themselves with strength and confidence without looking forced. Still, your photographer should be able to guide you in adopting assertive postures that communicate your desirability as a colleague and contributor while expressing your personality authentically.
It’s important to remember that it’s not your job to look good in photographs. It’s your photographer's job to make you look good by coaching you in using body language to present yourself as the confident, approachable winner everyone wants on their team.
